The Funny Paper

I am so proud of Miss Kirstyn. We have been talking a LOT lately about not wasting and taking care of this earth that God gave us. I've already mentioned that we are composting and that has been like a giant science experiment. Well, on Saturday when it came time to wrap Kaleb's birthday present...

Kirstyn said, "Mommy, how will we wrap his present and not waste everything?"

Me: "Let's use a bag we already have and some tissue paper we saved from your last birthday."

K: "Great Idea."

*looking through box where we keep bags and tissue*

K: "Mommy, we need another plan. Kaleb won't like a princess bag or baby bag."

*think think think (starting to hurt) think think think*

Me: "I KNOW! Let's look in the recycle bin!"

Kirstyn loved my idea and Kaleb didn't seem to mind at all. My mom used to do this all of the time to save money on purchasing wrapping paper and I can't believe it has taken me this long to "think" of it!

Oh and I just had to share these pictures of Kirstyn at the birthday party. There was a giant bounce house and other fun things to do but Miss Kirstyn wanted to sit and hold "pretty baby Claire". She also talked Trinity into coming over and playing with her too for a few minutes. Wow, Carrie, my baby looks really grown up holding your baby!

Please tell me your favorite way to save the environment or save some money!

I love that you used the funnies! Your daughter is absolutely darling.

It's funny that you wrote about this...I have just recently started saving the funnies for that same reason instead of throwing them in the recycle bin with the newspaper.
The kids love it!

We used to wrap gifts in newspaper all the time when I was growing up. It became a game to see who could get the most outrageous stories on the packages they wrapped!

My sister always wraps her gifts in the funny pages!

I make gift cards out of old buisness cards. Just glue 2 cards right together, clip into a tag shape, and punch a hole in the top for string or ribbon.

Hey - today was recycling and composte day at my house. 5 bags of recycling (shredding paper takes up SO much room in the bag, I usually save that stuff up and just do it all at once). The bins can get kind of gross in the summer, but I am glad the municipality picks them up every 2 weeks. Our garbage pick (next week) up is always much smaller.

And we do reuse when we can. Just realized yesterday my soup pot has a small hole in the bottom, but it will look adorable on the deck this summer with some greenery coming out the top:)

We also wrapped with newspaper growing up. I don't know if we did it to save money, recycle, or what, but I don't remember ever buying wrapping paper.
My 8 year old is actually the queen of recycling. She won't let me throw anything away. Her favorite thing is empty boxes. She turns them into stuffed animal beds, chairs for her dolls, homes for bugs.. anything! She actually digs in my trash can!

Wow, she does look like a big girl holding baby Claire!

And yes, we used to do the comic strip as wrapping paper too when I was a kid. I think it's a wonderful idea!!

I'm also switching to re-usable, washable cloths in the kitchen to cut down on my paper towel usage...

Great idea! Adorable kids too...

I save the cereal bags and use them instead of wax paper...at least they get a second and sometimes third use.

Gift wrap can be expensive and it's usually just thrown away anyway, this is a great alternative!
