Picture Madness!

Okay, I have both good and bad news!

Good news: I got a new camera!!! (Not just any camera, a Nikon D40 with 2 lenses!)

Bad news: I have tons and tons of really awesome pictures and NO GOOD PLAN for storing and backing them up!

So, back to the good news. I have been whining for talking about getting a new camera for a year now and apparently my family was paying attention! See, no one was planning on spending THAT MUCH money on me for Christmas so they all banned together and gave me money that was specifically earmarked for me to purchase myself that new camera. My mom gave me money, my sister gave me money, my grandparents gave me money, my in-laws gave me money, an uncle sent me money, David's brother and sister in law gave me money....you get the idea, they had all banned together with David to make sure that I could get my camera. YEAH! I was so excited when the total finally made it to the sale price of my camera (We were actually able to buy it on the 23rd and David let me 'open it' on Christmas Eve so I could have it to use on Christmas Day)!

So, now back to the bad news that YOU my WONDERFUL reader can help me turn into good news. My current picture organization system is simply to download to computer and backup on CDs. It is sloppy and slow at best. So, my question for you is, do you use an online backup system? How do you organize your pictures? Please help...tell me the method to your 'picture madness'!

YAY!! Congrats on your new DSLR!!!!

I use Lightroom to organize my photos, but Picasa is a GREAT online back up tool with large file backup. I use Flickr and use those links to host my pictures...the quality is a lot better than what blogger allows.

But, I don't trust just anyone for backup, so I have a back-up external drive that I have my computer automatically backup to once a week! An external drive will be a LOT faster than CDs and you can get them for so cheap now!

YAY YAY YAY FOR THE NEW CAMERA.

I am no help on the other front. I am going to read your comments to see if I can get some help here too!

hmm, yeah, I use flickr too, but I am pissed at them so. boo.

I do the cd back up like you do and it takes forever and the 700 pictures I took at Disney won't even fit on ONE damn disk so ugh.

Congratulations on your camera! That is what I have - got it for my last birthday - and I love, love it. Hope you do, too.

I don't use an online backup system. We bought a fairly inexpensive external hard drive and I use that. It's quick and easy. I organize them chronologically by date and a title that I will recognize.

Have fun!

Oh how exciting! so happy you finally got your camera, what a great family you have :)

I do the same back up you, hard drive and CD's. I find uploading them to flikr etc just as time consuming and more annoying so I don't do it. And I have yet to figure out how to use Flikr to display photo's on my blog.

I'll be back to see what others suggest!

I use Shutterfly. And snapfish. And an external hard drive. I'm a bit paranoid about losing my pictures. :)

Yay for a new camera! It's interesting how we have to be careful in this digital age with all our memories in electronic format, isn't it? My parents growing up kept all the proofs in a safety deposit box, but I suppose that's not an option these days!

Oh, and I have no answer for you. That's what I do, but I don't have children so my pictures aren't of their first steps or anything like that.

So excited for you!! You need to show us some of those awesome new photos!

I bet you're expecting me to have a great backup sytem in place, huh? Well, I don't. I upload almost everything to Flickr and host my blog photos that way, and I save everything on flash drives. That's it. i need to get an external hard drive.

As the proud new owner of a Canon 40D, I *totally* relate to your joy. Cameras make me drool....

As for backing up your stuff, definitely get yourself an external drive. They are relatively cheap (for the space you get) and VERY fast.

BTW - visiting from SITS. Congrats on being saucy!!

I use my external drive too. It can hold A LOT! I guess I don't trust the online services not to lose them. Just stumbled onto your blog!

Oh the bane of my existence! Always have TWO backup copies - online and an external hard drive will be fastest. Now I need to shut up and do the same before I lose them all!

ENJOY your new camera - well done!

Congratulations on your new camera. I have a cheapies Samsung S806 8.1 megapixel camera but it does me good. My pictures are currently on my hard drive. Have y ou considered an External USB hard drive? Love your Saucy blog by the way!

Congrats on being saucy! I too am hoping to get a new camera within the next few months.

We lost our hard drive two years ago, and tons of pictures. I was not good about backing them up on CD as often as I should. When we got the new hard drive, we also bought an 80 GB external hard drive. It's as simple as dragging the photos from one location to the other. And now I don't have to worry about losing them. And it's always hooked up to my computer so if I need anything, I don't have to search through old CDs. Hope this helps.

I'M NOT COOL ENOUGH TO HAVE MADE IT TO ON-LINE STORAGE YET (MAYBE ONE DAY?!) I SUGGEST BACKING UP YOUR PHOTOS WITH 2 CDS, AND STORING ONE AT A FAMILY MEMBER'S HOME. I ALSO WAIT FOR SD CARDS TO GO ON SALE, STOCK UP, AND STORE REALLY IMPORTANT (OKAY, ALL OF THEM) PHOTOS ON THOSE. I ALSO INVESTED (ON SALE) IN A BACK UP EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE--THEY REALLY AREN'T THAT COSTLY. YOU COULD ALSO POST LOTS AND LOTS OF PHOTOS ON YOUR BLOG, AND THEN BACK THAT UP! COMING AT YA FROM SITS!

I'm so jealous! I want a new camera now that I've gotten into posting pictures on my blog. I need to start scheming. To bad Christmas is far away.

Hallo! ;) I use Photobucket. Of cos I still have a ton of photos stored in my laptop hard disk. So I've been planning to get a portable hard disk as well. Haha! But that's a great camera, by the way! :)

I have a D40X and let me tell you, it's my secret lover. My husband has never quite understood. :) Enjoy! Flickr is great, and if your computer crashes they are all there.

I don't know a good backup system, but I do use Picasa on the computer to organize what I have on the hard drive. It makes it easy to find all the photos that may have been filed in weird places in the past. If you learn any good methods from your other talented readers though, I hope you will share!

WHOOOO HOOOOO on the camera love! I adore my new Canon, have no idea to use a lot of the cool dude features, but it's so much fun to have. They're so heavy tho, can't get over that.

I use Flickr and I have an external hard drive to back up everything because I would lose my mind if I lost my pictures. REALLY.
